At the Last Supper, on the night he was betrayed, our Savior instituted the Eucharistic sacrifice of his Body and Blood. This he did in order to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the ages until he should come again, and so to entrust to his beloved Spouse, the Church, a memorial of his death and resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a Paschal banquet in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us.
The sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist takes place in second grade. Preparation to receive the sacraments is an important part of our Faith Formation Program. The goal is that each student will approach the altar joyfully and with a clear understanding of the commitment being undertaken. Two years of formal religious education (via Parish Academy enrollment or Faith Formation) are required to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist.
In advance of the ceremonies, parishioners with candidates will be required to attend a parent meeting to receive information concerning First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Candidates will also have sessions during the Faith Formation year to review these two Sacraments and practice their reception. This will occur during normal Faith Formation times.
If you are a parent of a child looking to make their First Holy Communion, please contact Sallie Kabash, Director of Religious Education, at 732.842.0348 x. 218 for more information.
